HLA-B27 is the main immunogenetic marker of high susceptibility to the development of ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew's disease) and other related seronegative spondyloarthropathies.

Analysis description

HLA-B27 is a major marker of susceptibility to AUTO-immune and immune-mediated diseases, including:

  1. Bechterew's disease (ankylosing spondylitis) causes inflammation of the intervertebral joints, which leads to their fusion, which leaves the spine in a kind of hard shell that restricts movement. The disease develops mainly at the age of 20-30 years, in men about 5 times more often. The onset of Bechterew's disease is almost always inconspicuous.
  2. REACTIVE ARTHRITIS. Causes inflammation of the joints, urethra, eyes, and sometimes skin lesions.
  3. JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. An inflammatory disease of the joints in children under the age of 16.
  4. ANTERIOR UVEITIS. Causes swelling and irritation in the middle layer of the eye.

SYMPTOMS for which the HLA-B27 test is performed:

  • joint pain.
  • stiffness or swelling of the spine, neck, or chest.
  • inflammation of the joints or urethra, accompanied by skin lesions.
  • recurrent inflammation in the eyes.

Your doctor may order HLA tests, including HLA-B27, when you receive a kidney or bone marrow transplant. These tests can be used to ensure a proper match between you and the donor.

HLA-B27 ANALYSIS:

  • determines a high probability of the development of these diseases in a still healthy person.
  • is performed to monitor the progression of autoimmune diseases.
  • can be used in conjunction with other tests to confirm the diagnosis.
