Analysis description
HLA-B27 is a major marker of susceptibility to AUTO-immune and immune-mediated diseases, including:
- Bechterew's disease (ankylosing spondylitis) causes inflammation of the intervertebral joints, which leads to their fusion, which leaves the spine in a kind of hard shell that restricts movement. The disease develops mainly at the age of 20-30 years, in men about 5 times more often. The onset of Bechterew's disease is almost always inconspicuous.
- REACTIVE ARTHRITIS. Causes inflammation of the joints, urethra, eyes, and sometimes skin lesions.
- JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. An inflammatory disease of the joints in children under the age of 16.
- ANTERIOR UVEITIS. Causes swelling and irritation in the middle layer of the eye.
⠀
SYMPTOMS for which the HLA-B27 test is performed:
- joint pain.
- stiffness or swelling of the spine, neck, or chest.
- inflammation of the joints or urethra, accompanied by skin lesions.
- recurrent inflammation in the eyes.
Your doctor may order HLA tests, including HLA-B27, when you receive a kidney or bone marrow transplant. These tests can be used to ensure a proper match between you and the donor.
HLA-B27 ANALYSIS:
- determines a high probability of the development of these diseases in a still healthy person.
- is performed to monitor the progression of autoimmune diseases.
- can be used in conjunction with other tests to confirm the diagnosis.
